I’m the biggest believer that your home is most serene when it when it reflects who you are.
A common challenge many of my client’s face is the all too daunting choice of selecting a colour palette that is consistent across your home. Whether you prefer tonal hues of muted shades, or vibrant pops of bold colours, finding the right colours that work together can feel like a guessing game.
Colour choices are so personal to you however, there are some guidelines that can help guide your decisions to find a palette that is uniquely you.
Here's some of my tip tips when it comes to choosing colours for your home…
Seek Inspiration
And I don’t just mean Pinterest. It could be nature, your favourite hotel, restaurant, or pub, but finding inspiration that that matches what you're trying to achieve for your space is so important as it will help you visualise how different colours can work together, and find a common theme in the combinations you like best.
Go beyond the latest trends
Build your colour palette based on the things around you that you love the most, not just the latest trends. This will mean your choices are more unique to you, and you will love them for longer. Questions I ask my clients are, what colours are you drawn to? What colours do you wear often? How do different colours make you feel? I think you can learn a lot about what colours are right for you from those answers.
Lighting
Before choosing any colours, pay close attention to lighting. Different colours will present themselves differently in different lights. The way one colour can look in a space with lots of windows can be very different to how it can look in space with limited natural light. Overhead artificial light will also change the way a colour can look depending on if it’s a warm or white light for example.
Keep it simple
Cohesion is key. When I create a colour scheme, I like to work with three to five colours or less. No one wants their house to feel like a bag of skittles, or maybe you do! But I prefer a more cohesive style when it comes to colour. You want your home to feel like it has continuity from space to space. Even more so in open plan spaces, where I advise sticking to a more grounding and neutral palette throughout, so the space feels connected. Be bold in spaces that are better defined like a bathroom or separate office.
I hope this helps, but most importantly, it's your home so stay true to you. And if you would like a little bit of help along the way to guide your choices, get in touch, we offer consultancy for the small and the big decisions across your home.
