Shortly after the purchase of this historic building in Duxford, Cambridge, we were commissioned to lead the interior architecture, design, and furnishing of the property, which was being developed into two serviced accommodation apartments. The building offered a distinctive mix of original features, including large windows, high ceilings, and steel frameworks, all of which inspired the design vision and guided our approach.
Our objective was to create interiors that balance style, character, and practicality. Each apartment needed to feel cohesive and inviting while withstanding the demands of short-term rental use. The design capitalises on the building’s scale and light, ensuring the spaces are functional for guests while retaining charm, originality, and a sense of personality.
The key challenge at Duxford Church was to transform a historic structure into serviced accommodation that is both practical and visually compelling. The apartments needed to accommodate a range of guests, offering comfort, functionality, and durability, while maintaining a unique identity that would appeal in a competitive rental market.
High ceilings, steel frameworks, and expansive windows presented both opportunities and constraints, requiring careful planning to create intimate, livable spaces. At the same time, each apartment needed its own character while adhering to an overarching cohesive style that reflects the property’s heritage.
We began by assessing the building’s architecture and layout, identifying how to maximise light, flow, and usability for short-term stays. A cohesive design theme was developed that could be adapted uniquely to each apartment, blending industrial and historic features with warm, modern interiors.
Materials, finishes, and furnishings were carefully selected for both style and durability, ensuring that the apartments could withstand frequent use while remaining inviting and comfortable. Bespoke joinery was introduced to maximise storage and function, and every detail was curated to provide a distinctive and memorable experience for guests.
Interior architecture and layout planning for two serviced accommodation apartments, bespoke joinery and furniture tailored for functionality and durability, material, finishes, and colour selection suitable for high-use rental spaces, coordination of all furnishings, styling, and practical elements for guest comfort, design that balances character, originality, and ease of maintenance for rental purposes.
Duxford Church demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can convert a historic property into stylish, functional, and high-performing serviced accommodation. Each apartment combines cohesion with individuality, blending original architectural features with practical, durable interiors that deliver a memorable experience for every guest.
