How to Design Your Bathroom

Bathroom designs should be practical but still wow each time you walk through the door.

Our Top Tips to Make the Most of Your Bathroom

There’s no reason why a bathroom shouldn’t feel as warm and welcoming as every other room in the house.

Gone are the times when a bathroom should be purely practical. The more time we spend at home, the more our homes become our sanctuaries, and there’s nothing better than returning after a long day to relax and unwind in a beautiful bathroom.

Your bathroom, after the kitchen, is probably one of the most important rooms in the house when it comes to resale value so it’s well worth investing the time and money in getting it right.

Here’s 10 of my professional design hints and tips for the perfect bathroom, shower room, or ensuite.

Here's 10 of my professional design hints and tips for the perfect bathroom, shower room, or ensuite.

Choose a fixed partial shower screen

Consider a fixed glass panel instead of a sliding or swinging door for a more modern feel. And don’t forget to place the shower controls on the side you enter the shower so you can turn the shower on without getting wet!

Floating vanities and toilets instantly elevate a bathrooms look.

A floating vanity unit & toilet

Floating vanities and toilets instantly elevate a bathrooms look. These distantly modern, wall mounted features give an illusion of extra room by freeing up wall & floor space, making even the smallest of bathrooms appear larger and more luxurious.

A neutral colour scheme

A neutral colour palette brings a light and natural feel to a bathroom space, consider natural stone tiles to soften the look. Neutral doesn’t have to mean all white, layer neutral colours and combine with striking bathroom accessories to create contrast and interest.

Choose neutral shades of brown and beige with wood accents

Calm and earthy hues of brown and beige are so 2023 and this colour palette works perfectly to create a tranquil, spa-like bathroom atmosphere. Add textures with wooden vanity units paired with striking accessories such as black and gold metallic accents for sleek, modern look.

Add a shower storage niche

Say goodbye to stuck on corner storage units and instead make storage a feature by designing a built-in shower niche for all your bathroom essentials.

Build in some luxurious features

Heated floors and towel bars have become the norm, elevate your bathroom with new technology, such as steam showers, and televisions mounted behind mirrors for added luxe.

Be strategic with mirror placement

To emphasise light, place mirrors in front of windows or near light fixtures to double the amount of light. Backlit mirrors are a great way to add light to darker bathrooms with no windows.

Don’t overlook accessories

Mirrors, light fixings, towel rails, and toilet roll holders are all features that can elevate the final finish of your bathroom.

Choose the right size tile

This is key to making your space feel bigger than it is. Using small bathroom tiles will require a lot of grouting which in fact makes a space feel smaller. Choosing larger tiles, even in a small space means less grout lines and will make the room feel bigger.

Use the same tile colour and pattern for the walls and floor

Using the same tile on the wall and floor means your eyes don’t see a separation making the walls appear bigger and further away.
