How to use Pinterest to help design your home

There's nothing I love more than answering your home design questions. And your questions are a great way to inspire some of my favourite blog posts.

So, here’s a great example. I was recently asked how to use Pinterest for inspiration to decorate a home. And it got me thinking, the world of social media makes everything seem so perfect, and Pinterest is no different. A whole feed of picture-perfect interiors, it’s no wonder it can feel daunting to know where to start!

There’s so much information, ideas, and inspiration available on Pinterest it’s a great place to start for home design inspiration. And I promise it doesn’t have to be daunting!

Do interior designers use Pinterest?

Yes, of course they do! Not only as a tool for inspiration but also as a place to share our own portfolio, our saved pins, and boards!

So, would you like to know my top tips to save you from falling down a Pinterest scrolling rabbit hole?

  1. Make a Pinboard for each room

I’ll let you into a secret, every room in my home has its own dedicated pinboard! And to start I literally pin any ideas that take my fancy without editing, just anything that feels relevant. You can now also add notes to pins to make it easier to remember what you pinned a particular image for.

2. Scroll down under images you like

When you find a pin you love scroll down because Pinterest has a clever algorithm to share images that are relevant or similar to the one you are viewing.

3. Define your Pinboards

Once you’ve gathered enough inspiration start to edit and delete pins on your pinboard that don’t feel right anymore or that don’t look consistent with the majority of your images in that board. If there is one image that doesn’t fit the rest of the theme its likely to throw you off the entire look you have started to create.

4. Plan purchases

Pinterest is actually a great place to find retailers of products that have been used in inspiration images.

5. Turn the ideas into a reality

And without a doubt this is the hardest part! Gathering ideas is one thing, making them a reality is another! The process of interior design is so much more than just saving ideas however, if you are working with a professional designer, having saved pinboards is a great way to share your inspiration.

However, I do need to Cavet my love for Pinterest. When it comes to professional design Pinterest can be a blessing and a curse at the same time and I sometimes find myself acting as a “Pinterest mediator” for clients who get themselves lost in the endless amounts of inspiration.

For example, once design development is complete and we are good to go, its certainty not the time to be searching for more ideas you may prefer instead!

For clients who have a vision for their space it’s my role as a designer to figure out what is it you actually like and if the ideas actually work together. If an idea doesn’t translate into your space or isn't practical for your lifestyle, then it’s not going to work.

I offer a range of design services from all out package of works or a bespoke service to suit your requirements, including hourly consultancy.  So, if you're endlessly scrolling Pinterest for inspiration, but have no clue where to start, get in touch for some professional guidance to help you make informed choices and move forward with confidence.
