Planning a Home Renovation? Here’s What Most People Get Wrong

And how to avoid the stress, delays, and decision fatigue with the right design support.

Renovating a home is a big investment not just financially, but emotionally, too.
You want it to feel right. To work for your lifestyle. To look amazing. And to add real value to your home.

But here’s the problem…Most homeowners dive in with the best intentions, and still end up overwhelmed, over budget, or second-guessing their decisions.

As a full-service interior designer in Cambridge, I’ve seen it all. And I can tell you: the same mistakes come up time and time again. Here’s what they are, and how to avoid them.

1. They call the builder first (before the design is ready)

It’s completely understandable, you’re excited to get started. But calling a builder before you’ve locked in your layout, finishes, lighting, and flow is like starting a road trip without a map.

What goes wrong:

  • Builders start quoting without clarity, leading to surprise costs later
  • You make rushed decisions on site instead of strategic ones beforehand
  • The space ends up feeling… fine, but not thoughtfully designed

The fix:
Work with a designer who creates a detailed plan before the build begins. At Styled Home Design, we produce a comprehensive design pack that communicates everything clearly to your contractor, saving time, stress, and budget surprises.

2. They underestimate the power of flow

Renovations aren’t just about what each room looks like. They’re about how everything works together from light, layout, materials and movement through the space.

When flow isn’t considered:

  • Rooms feel disconnected
  • Lighting feels flat or overly harsh
  • The home lacks that sense of calm cohesion

The fix:
Start with how you live, and design around that. We focus on creating spaces that feel intentional and intuitive from sightlines and zoning to layered materials, finishes and lighting that adapts from day to night.

3. They try to manage it all themselves

Pinterest boards, spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups with trades, delivery deadlines, changing suppliers mid-project… It’s exhausting.

You’re busy. You don’t need a second job.

The fix:
A full-service interior designer (👋 hi) takes the weight off your shoulders.
We manage every detail of the design and coordinate with your builder, so you can focus on your life, not chasing trades or second-guessing tile samples.

4. They leave design decisions too late

Decision fatigue is real, especially when you’re being asked to make 50 different choices on site in the middle of the build.

And the longer you leave those choices, the fewer options (and budget wiggle room) you’ll have.

The fix:
We finalise your design decisions upfront and present them in a cohesive pack, so you're not making rushed calls mid-build. It's a calmer, more confident way to renovate, and your future self will thank you for it.
