To limewash or not to limewash?

Move over flat painted walls, there’s a new, (or not so new), kid in town.

Us interior designers have a new darling, introducing limewash paint. Thanks to its new vivid colours and textured finish, the look is coming into the spotlight, and I’m here for all the romantic, old world feels its giving off!

If you know me well enough by now you’ll know I’m a sucker for soft, muted colour tones, and natural textures. So, it’s no surprise I’m drawn to the limewashed wall trend.

I’ve been deliberating whether to go for limewash or micro cement for a staircase feature wall in my own home, and I’ve finally decided to go for limewash!

Obviously I’ve done my homework and here’s what I’ve learned so far…

  • Although lime washed walls have become increasingly popular it’s far from a trend. Lime wash is actually an accent staple dating back to Roman times and was one of the original house paints.
  • Its mineral base not only leaves you with a beautiful chalky, textured finish, perfect for adding depth to flat walls,  it’s also an environmentally friendly paint choice.
  • It’s up to 10 times darker when it’s wet so it’s important to test colours, typically up to 3 coats are recommended.
  • Applying it is a technique, (and you have to know what you’re doing!) For interior spaces its recommend to prepare surfaces with an acrylic based primer using a natural bristled brush that’s at least six inches wide.
  • The textured look is created by the brush stroke, and there are three types of strokes, horizontal, vertical and a cloud like pattern.

If you like this finish as much as I do I’d recommend Bauwerk colour they specialise in this product and have a wide range of beautiful colours.

Watch this space, I can’t wait to share my results with you!
